What can I expect when I call the Crisis Line?

The Crisis Centre of BC answers calls from a variety of services including 9-8-8, 310-6789 and 1-800-SUICIDE.

When you reach out, you can expect a dedicated responder to provide compassionate, judgment-free listening – a safe space where your feelings are heard and valued. Our responders engage with empathy, seeking to understand whatever you are going through. No matter the nature of your struggle, they are here to support you, helping explore ways to create safety during overwhelming moments.

In some cases, such as when you call 9-8-8, you’ll hear a brief recorded message confirming you’re in the right place. You may also have the option to choose your preferred language – English or French. Additionally, most callers can indicate if they are under 18 or identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis.

In some regions, you may be directed to your province or territory’s existing crisis service, accompanied by a welcoming message from that specific service. If there’s a brief wait, we encourage you to stay with us – your call will be answered.

We believe that no problem is too difficult, and there is no judgment here. Our responders are dedicated to helping you find a way through, offering unwavering support regardless of the challenges you’re facing.

Unsure if you need help? Reach out to 9-8-8 – a responder will be there to listen, talk things through, and provide the support you need.

Our Impact The topic and word "suicide" is not so scary after taking a training from the Crisis Centre of BC. I'm grateful to have been here today, and am hopeful that I can help people in the future. safeTALK participant, Agassiz
