Passing of Betty Tarrant – First Crisis Centre Executive Director

Posted by & filed under News, Uncategorized.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Betty Tarrant on December 3, 2016 at age 87.  Betty was a founding member and the first Executive Director of the Crisis Centre back in 1969.

Betty was a nurse for Vancouver Police and Canadian Mental Health Society, community organizer and administrator with the Ministry of Attorney General and Canadian Cancer Society. Betty’s service to those in need included past Board member of the John Howard Society, Vancouver Legal Aid Society, Downtown East Side Residents Association, Aurora House and member of the Kitsilano Community Health Team.

During her very active life she found time to travel the world extensively. Betty often said she didn’t want to get old and regret she had not traveled. She twice volunteered as a nurse in Africa.

We would not be the organization we are today without Betty’s leadership through the 60’s and 70’s. Betty, thank you for your vision and your dedication to mental health and suicide prevention.
