The Crisis Centre of BC is offering 8-week support groups for individuals grieving a loss to suicide. These groups provide a space for those who have experienced this unique type of loss to come together, share their journeys, and find healing through mutual support. Led by compassionate and experienced guides, these groups emphasize community connection and understanding, rather than offering a counseling group model. Participants will also have opportunities to learn about the complexities of suicide grief and engage in meaningful discussions.

Grieving after a suicide often comes with questions like, “Why did this happen?” or feelings of guilt, wondering, “What could I have done to prevent this?” In a group setting, participants can start to address these emotions, feel less alone, and experience the power of compassionate mutual support. Grief from suicide loss can also be compounded by the stigma surrounding suicide. Our support groups aim to break this isolation, offering a space where participants can share their stories openly and begin building long-term connections.

Key Features of Our Groups:

  • A safe, compassionate environment for sharing experiences and receiving support
  • Tools and resources to help navigate grief and integrate it into daily life
  • Practical guidance and information alongside opportunities to connect with community resources
  • A respectful space to honour and remember the life of the person who has died
  • Dedicated time in weeks 4 and 5 to focus on the life of the loved one, encouraging participants to ultimately connect the survivor with the life of their loved one, as opposed to the death

Our 8-week support groups are initially being offered in person at the Crisis Centre of BC, located at 763 E Broadway, Vancouver, BC.

Important Information Before Joining the Waitlist

Due to high demand, there may be a wait for placement in a group. If you require more immediate assistance, please reach out to the BC Bereavement Helpline at 1-877-779-2223 or call the National Suicide Crisis Helpline at 9-8-8.

  • Groups are limited to nine participants to ensure meaningful connection and engagement.
  • Participants should commit to attending all 8 sessions, as each meeting builds on the prior ones.
  • Groups are for adults and are open to individuals from various relationships with the deceased (e.g., parent, sibling, friend, etc.). Group composition is determined by waitlist order, not the timing of the loss or relationship to the deceased.
  • Registration is on an individual basis—only one person may register per submission.
  • This program is available exclusively to residents of British Columbia.
  • Our intake process involves two steps: completing the waitlist intake form, linked below and participating in a follow-up intake conversation with a facilitator when space becomes available.
  • As a charity, we kindly request a contribution of $150 upon confirmation of a spot in the group. This nominal fee helps cover the operational cost of the program and secure your participation.

Our Impact The topic and word "suicide" is not so scary after taking a training from the Crisis Centre of BC. I'm grateful to have been here today, and am hopeful that I can help people in the future. safeTALK participant, Agassiz
