Running is how I honour Matthew

Posted by & filed under News.

Matthew was a skilled athlete, a high level hockey player, and a focused runner. Ten years ago, at the age of 25, Matthew took his life.

Sharee Proudfoot is Matthew’s aunt. To honour her nephew’s memory and raise awareness that help is always a call away, Sharee Proudfoot is running to save lives in support of the Crisis Centre of BC.

“After Matthew’s death I joined a walk/run group as a way to remember Matthew and support my brother and sister-in-law,” states Sharee. “In 2009 I ran the Seattle half-marathon – the last organized run Matthew participated in.”

This June the Crisis Centre of BC is participating in the Scotiabank Charity Challenge. Walkers and runners of every level are encouraged to sign up and fundraise for the Centre’s life-saving programs and services.

“I know the Crisis Centre has a lot to offer to help young people who suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts,” says Sharee, who is also a retired school teacher. “It is an important organization, and I am inspired by people who give their own time and experience to educate others and answer the crisis line.  This is not an easy thing to do. I am grateful we have people who are so committed to helping others.”

“Issues that involve mental health are greater than ever, and we know they touch every level of our society.”

A seasoned runner, Sharee suggests that “getting into walking or running on a regular basis means that you are aware of the importance of self care. Be gentle with yourself and gradually work up to your goal. For me, I did reach a runner’s high and an awareness of how running can be an incredible stress releaser. Join a club where there is a supportive group and people who are trained in the field and who will lead you to success.”
